Drug WAY-316606 To Move Ahead With Pharma Company
The Guardian has reported the intriguing drug WAY-316606, which was originally developed for osteoporosis, may soon be entering human hair growth clinical trials with the help of an Italian pharmaceutical company.
I was pleasantly surprised to find some worthwhile information in the latest “mainstream media baldness cure” article published by The Guardian today. I should also add I enjoyed reading the Guardian’s article and I thought it was a well done piece. The write-up detailed background information on the discovery of WAY-316606’s potential role in hair growth. If you remember back in May 2018, the drug made headlines after researchers Drs. Nathan Hawkshaw and Ralf Paus of Manchester University published a scientific article about WAY’s effect on inhibiting the SFRP1 protein to induce hair growth. The team had been researching the drug cyclosporine A (CsA) with the intention of uncovering the secret to its hair growth effect. Hawkshaw and Paus figured, if they could identify the mechanism of action that causes CsA to grow hair, and then duplicate that action without the other potential side effects that come with cyclosporine A, they would have a winner on their hands. That potential “winner” would prove to be WAY-316606.

The Next Step
After the initial wave of articles on the WAY-316606 discovery faded out, us dedicated hair seekers still had a question on our minds. When and how is this drug going to be trialed on humans? The airwaves were silent. Until now.
This latest follow-up Guardian article declares that Italian pharmaceutical company Giuliani is working to get WAY-316606 into human trials. Bravo. These Italian companies seem to take a bit of initiative when it comes to hair growth research. The Guardian article “How close is a cure for baldness?” also mentions RiverTown Therapeutics and describes them as “exploring a similar avenue with their drug RT1640.” Another tidbit was added after the mention of RiverTown and we can say the writer was 100% accurate: “it’s fair to say that whoever gets there first will make a lot of money.” 😉

Too far out to say, but CsA does have some powerful hair growth effects. If WAY was similar it could potentially regrow some lost hair.

I have read the original publication about WAY-316606 and I find something still concerning; all the hair follicles were taken from the back of the head of 40 patients. I feel it is unlikely those patients suffered from DUPA, hence we can assume that the hair follicles were all healthy and resistant to pattern baldness (be it caused by DHT or other factors). It doesn’t mean that WAY-316606 will necessarily be effective on a thinning hair. For instance castor oil is known for its hypertrichosis effect (topically or orally) and thus stimulates hair growth, but it remains kind of ineffective as a real solution to prevent thinning hair from falling. Although, the mode of action is quite different, it would have been interesting to have the same test performed on thinned hair. What do you think?
If the follicles were outside of the body they were in a comprised state and no longer deemed “healthy” in my opinion. But ultimately, for now I’ll let the researchers do their thing and hope that this gets into human trials and be thankful for that, and then check out their results in humans.

Hope way 316 analogues work and are released soon.. but.. some big questions.. first in the graph from hawks research it shows y growth in x days BUT how long did the hairs get past that date –did they grow longer like terminal normal hair?? Second these test follicles were they compromised by dht to vellus status?? Third does way 316 reverse dht affected follicles to normal status? Forth … what is relationship between dht and sfrp protein that way 316 interrupts BECAUSE is it dht or sfrp that causes the baldness. .. perhaps you can clarify the above or hopefully ask the manchester team these queries.
