Turn Biotechnologies: mRNA Hair Growth Therapy

Today, I am pleased to introduce yet another company entering the hair growth treatment industry, Turn Biotechnologies. The company is creating therapies which restore human cells to a more youthful state and has a program targeting skin and hair.

Turn Biotechnologies is one of the latest companies to make waves in the anti-aging/aging-reversal sector. The company is based in San Francisco, CA with its scientific roots extending to Stanford University. Epigenetic reprogramming of age (ERA), the core technology of Turn Biotechnologies, was discovered and patented in the lab of Turn Bio’s co-founder Dr. Vittorio Sebastiano at Stanford. According to Turn Bio’s website, ERA is a cellular programming technology with similarities to the concept of induced pluripotent stem cells, however, the goal of ERA is revert cells to a more youthful state while maintaining their cellular identity, whereas iPSCs are created by reverting a mature cell back to a different, more potent type of cell. In other words, Turn Bio wants to reverse the age of your skin and hair cells back to early adulthood, but not all the way back to when you were an embryo.

TRN-001:  mRNA Therapy For Dermatology

Luckily for us, Turn Biotechnologies has its sights set on skin and hair rejuvenation, among other age-related targets. Currently, their pipeline shows programs for dermatology, osteo-arthritis & cartilage damage, ophthalmology, and musculature. TRN-001 is the name of Turn Bio’s dermatology therapy and the Research Areas section of their website mentions of that TRN-001 has the potential to treat hair loss, loss of hair color, and even scarring. An interesting tidbit, one member of Turn Bio’s Scientific Advisory Board is none other than Dr. Michael Longaker, who recently published the popular study on verteporfin inducing skin/hair regeneration. Another member of Turn’s S.A.B. is Dr. Thomas Rando who is very well known in the aging research field.

Q&A With Turn Biotechnologies CEO Anja Krammer

For this article, I was able to receive commentary from the CEO of Turn Biotechnologies, Anja Krammer, who gives us a little more insight into the TRN-001 program below.

FT: Your company website shows three programs currently at the preclinical in vivo stage. Which is currently the lead program at Turn Biotechnologies?

AK: TRN-001 is our lead program.  TRN-001 is focused on Dermatology in skin and hair.

FT: Do you have an estimated timeline to begin clinical trials for TRN-001?

AK: We envision moving towards a Phase 1 clinical trial sometime in late 2022. We are currently in pre-clinical.

FT: Can you give us a brief description of how the ERA technology works? Will TRN-001 be a topical application or injection?

AK: Our initial product will be an injection into the skin or scalp (similar to the type of needle injection you would expect with a botox treatment).

ERAT is a novel patented mRNA platform to combat the effects of aging in the epigenome, thus restoring optimal gene expression and enabling cells to function as vigorously as when they were younger. Turn Bio’s scientific breakthrough attacks age-related diseases, with an initial focus on dermatological conditions.

Our technology can control reprogramming by moving the epigenome to a more youthful state one step at a time, by carefully pulsing the cell with our mRNA transfection factors, each pulse drives the epigenome to a more vigorous state, protecting the patient while steadily restoring cell functionality.  We can also add or subtract specific factors, depending on the benefit they provide with specific tissue.

FTAny final words to share about the vision of Turn Biotechnologies?

AK: Turn Biotechnologies is turning back the clock on age-related diseases by restoring the body’s own cells. People develop many age-related conditions and ailments because cells lose the ability to heal our bodies efficiently by producing new cells. The problem is not with the cells themselves, but with the epigenome, the chemical compounds and proteins that turn genes on/off and control protein production in particular cells. As we age, defects accumulate in the epigenome, impairing cells’ ability to perform processes that keep the body working properly, including cell division, protein production, metabolism and cell-to-cell signaling.

ERAT, our novel mRNA platform technology, reprograms the epigenome to restore cells’ abilities to heal the body from within — true personalized medicine! (end)

It’s great to see a company with a promising new technology platform focusing on hair first. We can also appreciate the fact that the TRN-001 program is not a pipeline pipedream as the company has raised significant venture capital to support clinical trials, including a recent deal with Khosla Ventures in April 2021. Follicle Thought would like to thank Anja Krammer for sharing with us, and we wish Turn Biotechnologies all the best in the coming months.

This brings Turn Bio into the realm of OliX, Moogene, and Quark Pharma as biotechs who have RNA gene therapies in the works for androgenic alopecia. Hair technology is advancing for sure.

    • Shayak on June 15, 2021 at 10:54 pm

Sorry, but i didn’t understand, exactly how it will help in patients with AGA.

      • Follicle Thought on June 15, 2021 at 11:49 pm

There’s not a complete synopsis given, however, we could concur that the plan involves restoring the function and viability of hair follicle stem cells/dermal papilla cells.

    Clinical trials start 2022??
Obviously we will spend our whole lives just research without treatment

    • Dark Prince on June 15, 2021 at 6:46 pm

i got a hair system… I’m not waiting in agony for the cure…when it comes it comes…in the meantime im rocking my hair system! this company’s approach is amazing on a side note…restoring cells back to youthfulness is the holy grail of medicine..

    • Yoda on June 15, 2021 at 6:46 pm

I feel your pain Ahmed, unfortunately this isn’t around the corner. Actually it seems at times like nothing ever is (and hasn’t been). That being said, my uneducated opinion is that Turn Bio’s treatment seems to be a more realistic (next gen) evolutionary technology than some of the cloning and stem cell paths that others are exploring. Thanks for the great article admin!

      • Ahmed bekeer on June 15, 2021 at 9:21 pm

        Yoda
Thank you for feeling my pain

    • dwain on June 15, 2021 at 6:48 pm

yep keeping these people in jobs ,you got to love Rockefeller corruption at its best keep people buying thinking they are getter well !

      • Follicle Thought on June 15, 2021 at 7:27 pm

I don’t understand the statement here dwain, keep people buying what exactly? Turn Bio is a startup selling nothing, they’re attempting to enter an FDA clinical trial.

        • dwain on June 15, 2021 at 9:24 pm

i replied to Ahmed beaker Rockefeller is evil owns to much in the medical field known fact.
They have treatments but best practice is to keep someone coming back bad business if we get well right ,if only we get rid of these evil corps things might be shiny days for humanity till then !

      • Keith on June 15, 2021 at 8:35 pm

Is there anything new coming out this year seeing that we are almost halfway through 2021?

    • Follicle Thought on June 15, 2021 at 7:24 pm

I hear ya Ahmed, but this is how the process goes, for better or whatever. Every new company you hear of from now on is going to be starting trials in 2021 at the earliest. Alternatively, we still have the potential to find a cell therapy which could launch quickly in Japan, or the “wildcard” variation of an OTC or device which can go into market almost immediately. We each make the choice to continue on the path or not…

Admin Much respect and appreciation to you and your articles I’m talking about research before 2021. Corporate research from 2015 and promises of a definitive cure for baldness in 2020; There is a site entitled 2020 on the basis of the end of the problem of baldness and its treatment. I hope to God the final cure soon

  3. Shia on June 15, 2021 at 8:23 pm

Eeehhh I have officially lost track of all the companies working on a potential cure. The more they are the better for us I guess. It’s sad how my mood is so largely influenced from my perception of my appearance. I wonder how many of us that struggle so much to cope with hair loss have some traits of the narcisistic disorder? The fact I might have to shave my head in the future literally terrifies me.
I can’t wait for the day I wake up, open this blog and read admin’s latest article in which he announces that they found a way to regrow hair

    • Tshitou on June 16, 2021 at 1:15 am

Totally understand your feelings….as same thing happens to me too

    • Follicle Thought on June 16, 2021 at 9:46 am

Absolutely the more the better. I hope to share that article for you someday.

    • Toccata on June 16, 2021 at 2:41 pm

      Shia,

Pretty sure most of us have some degree of Body Dysmorphia…
      https://eatingdisordersolutions.com/body-dysmorphic-eating-disorder-treatment/body-dysmorphia-quiz/

“Lack of hair” is listed as one of most common perceived flaws.

      • Woofy97 on June 17, 2021 at 3:17 pm

Nobody wants to go bald. I don’t think we don’t have a mental illness we have a cosmetic issue that isn’t being taken seriously enough.

  4. woofy97 on June 16, 2021 at 1:23 am

i wonder when moongene will start trials

  5. Hair Salon on June 16, 2021 at 4:50 am

    Can’t wait to see results

  6. Stephan on June 16, 2021 at 6:48 pm

If this mrna therapies work like in theory for all the body, that would be the dream of almost endless youth))) hope i’ll live long enough) wish luck and success to all scientists trying to make our lifes worthfull)

  7. D1 on June 17, 2021 at 8:44 am

@Follicle Thought do you have any contact with biosplice? The wait is so long now. Also how is your pipeline of news going?

    • Follicle Thought on June 17, 2021 at 9:17 am

I do have contact at Biosplice D1, however there is no news to share. I don’t remember a formal announcement that they submitted their data to Turkey regulators, but it is assumed that they did. If they didn’t, that could be a telling sign. Also, just fyi, that cosmetic topical that you’ve asked about, I’m not in touch with the company anymore. If news ever surfaces from them online I would share it though.

  8. felix on June 17, 2021 at 9:46 am

Biosplice’s days of getting attention for their hairloss drug are about over it appears to me. It’s Kintor up to plate now.

  9. D1 on June 17, 2021 at 10:53 am

The hair loss news feels so dead right now. Is shiseido the next big results coming up in october or november?

    • Maker on June 17, 2021 at 1:49 pm

I feel it’s looking better than ever to be honest. HopeMed, Kintor, CKbiotech will all likely going to succeed. Other than those you have the mRNA which apparently thinks the androgen receptor is a good target so one of those will come through too and then you have the possible surprises with cell technologies.

    • Stephan on June 17, 2021 at 3:28 pm

I have some faith in triplehair th16 should be out in the next weeks, months

  10. jim jansen on June 17, 2021 at 4:53 pm

i’ve been following this website for the last 5 years now, and still no
hair cure, only testing, new companies, delay’s, some kind of lotion that doesn’t work etc etc.
Every year i read the same stories, new hair companie with great results, look at the photo’s, and there are 3 extra hairs or a blurry photo
When can we expect hair cloning like the shisheido method, or a threatment that can really give someone his hair back .
Thanks for all the great work you put in this website
    Jim

    • Follicle Thought on June 17, 2021 at 5:12 pm

It certainly does require patience, Jim.

  11. john on June 17, 2021 at 9:39 pm

I don’t think the baldness problem can be solved.
I’ll believe it when I see proof otherwise. Until that time it’s a pipe dream.

    • Follicle Thought on June 17, 2021 at 11:08 pm

I feel like it’s obvious baldness can be solved, it’s just a matter of resources being applied and when.

  12. Shayak on June 18, 2021 at 12:03 am

I concur with admin, the baldness problem can be solved , but the time frame nobody knows( but i think now research is progressing much faster). And hair loss cure is not an easy feat, contrary to what some people say o ( i can understand their frustration, cos am on the same boat), it might look like ohh its just hair why can’t just scientist solve it . Hair loss has many internal reasons ( some we know , some we don’t, research is still going on).

    • Yoda on June 18, 2021 at 10:23 am

Agree with Admin and Shayak, if it was that easy everyone would be doing it. Heck, they can’t even solve seborrheic dermatitis yet. However, time and money will prevail, we just don’t know when.

  13. Anthony Salazar on June 18, 2021 at 3:38 am

Baldness can be solved because baldness can already be solved (fin, min, dit, ketoconazole, FU) these are just sadly not an option or not sufficient for most.

  14. Michelle on June 21, 2021 at 11:48 am

Once the clinical trials start, how does one enroll for them?

    • Follicle Thought on June 21, 2021 at 3:35 pm

First, you’d have to know where the trial is taking place. Then, if you’re within the proximity, you can contact the company running the trial for more information. There will be some time before Turn kicks off their human trial.

  15. Devit on June 23, 2021 at 1:00 pm

    Silence since long..

    Hello admin,
So we have any update on Breezula or Follica? What they are waiting for staring their trail? now?

    • Follicle Thought on June 23, 2021 at 9:31 pm

Hi Devit, I think this article was published last week,no? We don’t know what the hold up is but Follica may be evaluating the decision to bring their treatment to market as is or wait for a newer drug to pair it with. They have a WNT activator drug in development with JW Pharma of Korea for those who forgot.

      • Devit on June 23, 2021 at 9:58 pm

        Thank you admin.
Yes I see this article published in last week. Your hard work really makes difference to keep our hope alive. I really appreciate this.

Silence I had observed from all users. Daily I visit this site to see what’s new. It also give me some phycological support when people share their knowledge, experience and fundings.

      • D1 on June 24, 2021 at 1:30 am

I’ve also heard through the grapevine that Follica may be looking to collaborate with another hair growth compound that is well known in the online world.

        What compound is this?

        • Follicle Thought on June 24, 2021 at 9:21 am

What is the source of this rumor D1?

          • D1 on June 25, 2021 at 6:27 pm

@Folliclethought that’s a quote from in this blogs comments some where

          • D1 on June 25, 2021 at 6:28 pm

            Which @folliclethought that you wrote

            • Follicle Thought on June 25, 2021 at 10:44 pm

Oh ok, you said “I’ve also heard” so I was wondering where you also heard it. Perhaps you are looking for CWL08006.

  16. Devit on June 23, 2021 at 10:15 pm

Sorry I miss to day thank you on Follica update.

  17. Yoda on June 25, 2021 at 6:08 pm

I had read that the federal government ended some sort regulation that the docs were using to give exosome treatments. That they would no longer be able to be used legally for hair loss. I looked at Dr. Greco’s site, he has taken it down (still has his PRP/CRP smoke and mirrors). McGrath still has it on his site. Hopefully this will become much more highly regulated as Yoda has serious doubts (to say the least) that exosomes have an appreciable effect for the vast majority of hair loss suffers. As well as the other that diseases that were alluding to a miracle for the thousands of dollars spent on exosome treatments. Yoda fell for PRP, basically useless. My educated guess is exosomes are PRP on steroids, much more $$$ with little to no benefit.

  18. Yoda on June 26, 2021 at 9:20 am

And the “esteemed” Dr. Alan Bauman still has exosome treatments on his site, along with other miracle cures like “PRP at home”, which has nothing to do with PRP. This new regulation isn’t being followed by some of the most egregious marketeers. Possibly they can fall back on that they aren’t really using exosomes? Hope the FDA catches up with all these “treatments” soon and adds very stiff regulations.

  19. Woofy97 on June 26, 2021 at 4:58 pm

They should just get rid of Advertising PRP for hairloss and just stop doing it. it has little to no effect. It’s not cosmetically pleasing for most.

    • Keith on June 26, 2021 at 5:42 pm

Tried prp with Greco and Bauman. No luck on either. Fin worked but totally fucked my neuro endocrine system. You may not notice it at first but after years of usage I was like a slow boiled frog.

  20. Woofy97 on June 26, 2021 at 5:01 pm

And even combined with acell. It’s amazing how people try really hard to take your money.

  21. valevty on July 19, 2021 at 4:38 am

Instead of reprogramming epiGNA it’s better to reprogramming DNA.
Turn Biotechnologies want to make money by providing personal very expensive medicine. There is succeeded experience of entering to the blood of chemical scissors for DNA to make work inside body. It will be really mass and relatively cheap solution.
