David Sinclair Is Working On Hair Regeneration

Perhaps the world’s most famous aging researcher, Dr. David Sinclair of Harvard University, recently revealed that his lab is working on an advanced method for hair restoration.

The Sinclair Lab at  Harvard Medical School Hair Growth Research

Located in Boston, MA, The Sinclair Lab conducts cutting-edge research on the mechanisms of biological aging. The laboratory’s namesake, Dr. David Sinclair, has become a poster child for the anti-aging industry, and possibly the world’s most famous scientist due to society’s growing interest in longevity. He’s made several appearances on the Joe Rogan Podcast including an episode posted on June 18, 2021. Sinclair is widely known for his research on NAD+, a coenzyme that plays a major role in cellular metabolism but degrades as people age. The Harvard professor is widely known for his intake of NMN, a precursor to NAD+ which can be taken as a dietary supplement, similar to NR

While many people anticipate David Sinclair to commercialize a pharmaceutical super NAD+ booster or even a gene therapy which “reprograms” cells to restore eyesight, none would predict that Sinclair may potentially solve hair loss by finding a new way to regrow hair. Until now, at least. This past week on Twitter, Sinclair shared the recent study written by Ralf Paus and Desmond Tobin, among others, which showed that hair greying is reversible and linked to stress levels in human tissue. He wrote in his own caption “In the future losing your hair or going grey will be a choice.” This prompted to me to inquire about his own interest in the subject, to which he was kind enough to respond to, see below.

A formidable new entity has now publicly entered the hair regeneration race. It’s still a bit of a mystery as to exactly what type of therapy the Sinclair Lab is developing; on one hand it sounds as if they are creating a gene-related therapy similar to Turn Biotechnologies, and on the other it sounds like they may be “cloning” hair follicles à la Dr. Tsuji. Either way, this is a significant news find. Sinclair would be quick to translate this technology into a clinical setting once the research has been validated.

Anyone currently supplementing NMN or NR? I’ve recently seen a study showing that used topically it may provide a small hair benefit as well.

This approach, alongside the new mRNA studies, makes me more excited than anything else. This research doesn’t rely on us understanding the specific pathways which lead to hair loss and going further down the 5AR and DHT rabbit hole which has produced anything significant in the last 20 years, it’s about restoring the hair to a point where it can fend for its self. We might find that trying to tackle the question of ‘What causes hair loss?’ has just been a distraction this whole time, there a numerous studies which identify multiple causes of hair loss, from DHT, Inflammation, Stress, Blood Flow etc… maybe trying to prevent all these is near impossible. We should be excited about any treatment which aims to allow our hair follicles to fight the causes, rather than trying to stop the causes in the first place.

    • Shayak on July 1, 2021 at 9:00 am

Great work Admin, thank you for keeping us updated! I think there are lots of research going on about hair loss and restoration ( either direct research or a by-product) that we don’t know , i mean they have not gone public about it. Who know you might stumble across one such research in ph1 trial.

      • Follicle Thought on July 1, 2021 at 9:11 am

Shayak, yes I agree there is likely many more researchers/companies who have an early stage program in AGA and we do not know about them yet.

    • MzGhia on March 15, 2022 at 4:27 pm

I have been supplementing for about a year. I am 71 and otherwise healthy. I have noted, or course all anecdotally, no more gray hair at my roots and the actual return of underarm and pubic hair. ( I know! That’s not the hair you want to regrow!). But there you have it!

      • Follicle Thought on March 15, 2022 at 5:06 pm

Thanks for feedback MzGhia. So you’ve noticed some hair repigmentaiton..

      • Fons on July 1, 2022 at 3:56 am

What’s your dose? Been doing 500mg daily for about a month myself

    • vince on August 8, 2022 at 5:40 pm

we will not see a hair cure in our lifetime. Nor will we see one for cancer. Jerry Lewis ran the telethon for decades and just how much closer are we for a cure. There is just to much money being made. Why don’t they just come out with it. Either they have a cure or not. Stop dragging us along.

      • Follicle Thought on August 8, 2022 at 6:58 pm

My man, if you follow the thread here there are many companies with scientists who are working on techniques and strategies to alleviate or cure hair loss. They are human and they are doing what they can with the resources they have. I’ve not seen many of these companies claim “we have a cure and it’s coming”, perhaps only a few of the ones without special attention to ethics have said things like this. The majority are saying “we’re trying, we’re working on it.” And that’s good enough for me. I would wager that you, too, know that a cure is possible and you desire it very much, but you’ve allowed your mind to share a prediction which you really don’t want. I understand even though I don’t agree.

        • Vince on August 9, 2022 at 10:45 am

          Hi there FT,
You are right on many fronts but it seems odd that hair growing on the side of your scalp yet to create the same growing environment one thousand’t of an inch away from that follicle seems to be such a huge mountain to climb.Even if scientists have the exact answer by the time they go thru regulatory hoops and trials maybe our grandchildren might benefit. Woman get all the attention but men suffer in silence.

          • Follicle Thought on August 9, 2022 at 4:45 pm

Vince, as simple as the cure to hair loss sounds, it requires $$ for scientists to work in labs and perform experiments. I know of a few who would love to examine biology between the side of the scalp and the top, but they need funding to do the work. With more resources we could at least be making steps along the way via improved therapies. Do you know anyone who could fund such studies? Can you reach out to philanthropists and tell them how meaningful AGA research can be? These are some of the only ways to help, the other option is to accept things are they are. But, simply refreshing hair loss websites and commenting that the cure will only be there for grandchildren does not help you or anyone else.

            • vince on August 11, 2022 at 2:59 pm

              Hi Ft,
I agree with you 100 percent but at the same time the damage to ones life from losing your hair is devastating. Yes we survive without hair but who knows what drives a man for such a loss. I mean it could and probably did mean the loss of a job over someone else or the loss of a relationship or just plain ones health over the trauma. People will discriminate and who ends up suffering. Coulda, shoulda, woulda one will never know.

            • Follicle Thought on August 11, 2022 at 9:37 pm

I understand what you mean Vince, that’s the reason I started a website called Follicle Thought. I hear ya. For individual cases I recommend people look into professional therapy for support.

To me, the bottom line is we need solutions. Solutions. Solutions. And the only way I see solutions coming is for scientists to do the work and create the drugs/therapies and for them to go through clinical trials. That is why I am focused on solutions such as philanthropists/investors supporting this work. Even when I preach this I notice that not many want to help pursue this initiative or do any legwork to support. Odd to me. Do you have another idea on how to create a positive change for people with hair loss?

            • vince on August 12, 2022 at 11:08 am

              FT,
Unfortunately i don’t. I did read one of your links to harvard (para-phrasing) scientist have found the cure for baldness. Even if they did it may not work for everyone but curiously how long it would be from that time to a real application.

            • Follicle Thought on August 12, 2022 at 10:26 pm

Vince, check out the Ultimate Guide to Hair Regeneration article for potential timelines for actual therapies in development. I’m not sure what you’re talking about Harvard.

Consistently do NAD Ivs and never noticed anything.

  3. Shia on June 26, 2021 at 3:47 pm

I don’t know how to translate in english the feeling I get from this.
Mr. Sinclair is like yeah I buy milk at the shop, I drive my cabriolet on sunny sundays and I have also created human skin organoids that grow hair (??).
It seems something enormous if true but the way he talked about it makes me hold back

    • Follicle Thought on June 26, 2021 at 3:57 pm

I know what you mean, but I keep in mind it was a short response on Twitter, and David Sinclair knows what he is talking about (when it comes to his own research).

  4. Lynn Shotwell on June 26, 2021 at 3:49 pm

For the past year I have been taking 300 mg of TRU NIAGEN daily and have never noticed any hair growth , or increased loss at 72 years old. I do shed more hair than I would like. This morning I heard an interview of Dr Sinclair with Dr Rhonda Patrick. Dr Sinclair mentions that he takes a full gram of NR and he keeps his refrigerated as it loses effectiveness at room temp. Maybe that is my problem. In any case, NR alone hasn’t done anything to increase hair growth for me.

    • Follicle Thought on June 26, 2021 at 3:57 pm

Thanks for sharing, Lynn. I edited my first comment a bit to clarify I don’t really expect a noticeable hair benefit from taking the supplements. However, I’m interested to hear any anecdotes as there was a recent study done showing a benefit for hair growth when used topically (albeit with many other ingredients) which I linked to in my previous comment.

    • Yoda on June 26, 2021 at 7:59 pm

I had read something about TRU NIAGEN before and took it as well for about a year. Didn’t notice anything, discontinued and didn’t notice anything, hair or not hair related.

  5. Woofy97 on June 26, 2021 at 4:51 pm

he’s a celebrity scientist. I’ll believe it when I see it tested on a human.

    • Follicle Thought on June 26, 2021 at 6:49 pm

True, but he’s also working in a Harvard Lab, not some community college in the middle of nowhere. Also, if you didn’t notice in the article he has already spun out research into a drug which is currently at phase 2 trials.

      • Woofy97 on June 26, 2021 at 8:30 pm

not trying to annoy you FT. But that’s great that he’s working in Harvard lab but Angela Christiano is working in a Columbia University lab lol it doesn’t mean much to me at this point.

        • Follicle Thought on June 26, 2021 at 9:12 pm

It’s all good bro, I don’t mind, I also don’t see a big point in your comment. Either you appreciate the fact that a prominent researcher like Sinclair is trying to solve your greatest ailment, or you don’t. There’s really no space for this in-between attitude in your comment and others. I know that if Sinclair were to put something out on the market you and other readers that try to brush off the news would be first in line with tears in your eyes and “thank you, thank you, thank you” on your lips. ? Treatments don’t just materialize onto the market, it starts with further-off news reports first. In any event you’ll be here tomorrow, and the day after and after to see what the latest news is. Thanks for reading and take care.

        • MRKA on June 27, 2021 at 9:53 am

That’s ok Woofy..but your opinion has absolutely zero impact in the hairloss world…
It would only matter if you had investment funds that you want to allocate to promising hair loss researchers/product development.

          • Woofy97 on June 27, 2021 at 1:10 pm

MRKA I already know that I’m not some idiot. My opinion may upset you but everything I said was true he’s a celebrity scientist and I’ll believe it when i see it tested on a human. If FT didn’t like the negative opinion he could have taken it down instead of reply to it.

            • Follicle Thought on June 27, 2021 at 2:04 pm

Sometimes it’s better to offer a greater perspective than to just shun ignorance. However, I do both.

    • Yoda on June 26, 2021 at 8:00 pm

      Atta boy Woofy!

      • Yoda on June 27, 2021 at 5:44 pm

Personally I didn’t think Woofy’s comment was out of line. I read it as the “Jury’s out” attitude. Maybe the “celebrity” bit was a trigger for some I prefer this perspective as opposed to wild, over the top, all eggs in one basket hype. Great to have a Harvard Scientist on the case, another one to add to the list. Will feel some excitement when/if he actually enters human clinical trials as well.

Hey admin, do you think we will still get some updates from Dr.Tsuji this year? Thank you.

        • Follicle Thought on June 27, 2021 at 10:18 am

Only if he raises some money Tshitou.

          • Tshitou on June 27, 2021 at 4:44 pm

I see. Yea, hopefully he can but seems hasn’t heard any updates about that for months. Honestly, I don’t mind people say Dr.Tsuji is a lier or something like that, as long as he can make his procedure move forward, then it’s still a good thing for me.

        • Yoda on June 27, 2021 at 5:46 pm

Maybe on his cosmetic lotions and potions! 😉

          • Tshitou on June 28, 2021 at 2:59 am

Yoda, i know what’s your opinion about the hair clone or the research of Dr.Tsuji. I am not saying you are totally wrong but I just think he maybe deserve another attempt. On the other hand, I feel that not many people are really caring about hair loss and they just want to make money from it. If everyone gets involved into this game is looking for money, Dr.Tsuji doesn’t require more than average.
My English is not good, but I hope you understand what I am trying to say.
            Thanks

  7. Yoda on June 26, 2021 at 8:01 pm

If nothing else, interesting as always Admin, thank you for the news.

    • Yoda on June 28, 2021 at 3:15 pm

Hi Tshitou, to clarify my opinion on hair cloning I thinks it’s exciting and will eventually be a viable option one day. I remember going to a seminar a transplant doc put on in the mid-1990’s and they spoke about it. Always thought it’d be closer, shows just what a challenge this technology is. I don’t believe we are just around the corner, it’s years away. How long? Not even the Yoda knows the answer to this question. It agitates Yoda when people speculate, listen to poor translations of YouTube bloggers as gospel and make choices about their hair loss situation based on blind optimism. Realistic hope is a good thing to have. As far as Dr Tsuji, from my perspective having his funding dry up, not being able to find new sources of money and launching a line of cosmetics doesn’t bode well. But who knows, anything could still happen.

  8. Brian on June 26, 2021 at 10:02 pm

When do you think a product would be available and would it be an OTC cosmetic?

    • Follicle Thought on June 27, 2021 at 10:16 am

Hi Brian, this would be a therapy of some sort to go through FDA trials, either a gene related therapy (mRNA or Crispr-like) or hair cloning type procedure. The information about NMN is just for background, this therapy does not have anything to do with NMN.

  9. James on June 27, 2021 at 12:15 am

  10. hopeful on June 27, 2021 at 2:09 am

Thank you for always keep us in the loop. Quick question.

Any idea if Follica has started phase 3 yet? It’s June and seems weird that there’s been no talk of it even starting. If they wrap it up by end of the year, what’s the soonest you think we’d see it on market?

I’ve come a long way in my journey. I just have a small spot left after 3 transplants, fin, minoxidil, laser. I have not tried microneedling. I was planning to wait for Follica to come to market because I didn’t want to try it myself, somehow mess it up, and create scar tissue that hinders what Follica could do for me in the future.

Don’t know if it’s possible to mess it up like that…but it seems risky to try myself when something approved might happen soon.

    • Follicle Thought on June 27, 2021 at 10:17 am

Follica has not started phase 3 yet and there is no apparent reason why not. We could only speculate at this point, but it is beginning to become odd.

    • Waiting for Follica on June 27, 2021 at 8:29 pm

I was going to make a similar comment. Follica seems to have gone stealth again; a post updating their status would drive a lot of clicks to your site.

      • Follicle Thought on June 28, 2021 at 10:01 am

Thanks, but I can only share an update when they make one and they are publicly traded company who is obligated to issue a press release for any substantial announcements.

    • Follicle Thought on June 27, 2021 at 10:20 am

Hi Drago, it looks to be a run-of-the-mill hair vitamin in a bottle. I would be surprised if it had any effect for just about anyone.

  11. Maker on June 27, 2021 at 5:59 pm

That’s great news! Currently there are so many different angles on how to solve this issue that I’m quite hopeful. I wonder how involved his lab actually is, the more the better imo as he surely has all the fundings he needs. He is probably referring to Koehler when he talks about skin organoids that grow hair. But just the fact that he mentions it and knows about it might be a good indicator that Koehlers lab isn’t ignoring the potential from their hair bearing skin organoids. When Koehler talked about it, it always seemed a bit that he hoped that his research were for a better use than just the “trivial” cosmetic condition mbp.

  12. Josh on June 28, 2021 at 3:17 pm

I’ve been almost entirely bald (typical male pattern baldness) for the past 25 years. About 6 weeks ago, I started taking another small molecule longevity supplement, alpha-ketoglutarate. I’m seeing hair growth in areas of my scalp that I have not seen in decades. I know, a sample size of 1 is an anecdote, but I can’t help but think that maybe a cocktail of akg and an NAD booster could yield some impressive results.

    • Nancy on June 28, 2021 at 6:02 pm

I am going to order the AKG from Longevity, but where do you get NAD. I want to see if the combo helps me. Do you think we should keep both refrigerated?

      Interesting, Josh.

    Hey,

I’m new in this community. I have been reading articles the whole day. First of all, thank you @FT for this kind work you have been conducting for a while. Everything is great here. Feel the atmosphere of people who really take this issue close to their heart and trying to spread the encouragement and positive attitude.

Secondly, I wanna ask @Yoda, as I’ve got one of the oldest followers, and you admin @FT about how you see the hair loss future. I mean that based on Yoda’s experience scientists have been trying to discover the holy grail, as you like to say, for decades now and since for guys like me who have no deep knowledge regarding the matter, it seems that we are still standing at the same spot. I am pretty sure that we’ve moved forward although that’s what I am trying to figure out how forward and how close we are to the remedy.
    Thank you in advance 🙂

Keep up admin. You do a great job. Cordial thanks.

    • Kapil on June 28, 2021 at 4:39 pm

      Hi GebGate
It was dead silent today what a day to join the forum without your comment it would have been on of very rare day without any comments

    • Follicle Thought on June 28, 2021 at 4:45 pm

Thanks for the kind words Geb, I appreciate them.

I think I could sum it all by saying, no one knows for sure exactly how close we are today and what will happen in the future, cloning could come out in several years in Japan or could take longer, no one knows. Patterns of the past do not represent the future when breakthroughs do occur, and it’s only one day/one breakthrough that separates the past from the future. You may want to take a listen to an MD scientist, Dr. Michael Fossell who is trying to cure Alzheimer’s disease through gene therapy. https://youtu.be/DQoqicgz4bQ?t=806 Starting at 13:26 – 15:24 he brings up an example that I have shared in the past as a metaphor to where we are in curing age-related diseases (e.g. andro alopecia) today. In synopsis, he knows we are getting closer everyday and we will do it.

      • Yoda on June 28, 2021 at 6:20 pm

I have little to add to admins great response. It’s been a long time coming to get the next wave of treatments which I feel will be evolutionary as opposed to revolutionary. However, everyday we are getting closer to the next evolutionaries and subsequent revolutionaries with more players in the game than ever.

        • 1919 on June 30, 2021 at 3:05 am

          Hi Yoda,
I would love to know your thoughts on which companies/ treatments are the strongest contenders in the pipeline. Youve watched many companies come and go. However, do you see any outstanding changes in this decade’s lineup which could “evolutionize” current treatment protocols?
          Thanks in advanced!

          • Yoda on June 30, 2021 at 7:32 pm

Hi 1919..almost the year that Yoda was born, well not quite! 🙂
Kind of cracks me up when someone asks a question like that of Yoda. Yeah, I’ve been at this game for a long time, however I’m none the wiser than anyone else on this forum when it comes to what’s in store for the future. Like I say, I’m most excited about the treatments that are in later stage clinical trials on humans, they have the best chance of seeing the light of day in the nearer term. The other stuff is interesting but many years away (and no, I can’t specifically quantify “many”). I try to keep a level head, not get too high nor low on treatment research news. I don’t hang my hopes on the future but be as proactive as possible, researching what’s currently available until the next gen treatments arrive. That is the only real value that Yoda and his 30 plus years of experience brings to the table.

  14. Woofy97 on June 28, 2021 at 5:15 pm

Yoda have you had any luck with micro needling? I forget if that is or was in your tool box. I ordered a micro needling pen on Amazon should see it soon.

    • Yoda on June 28, 2021 at 6:25 pm

Hi Woofy, it’s hard to tell if I’ve had any luck with micro needling but if I were to guess I’d say no, it hasn’t added much. Probably good to help with topical penetration is all. I have a derminator I use at 1.5 mm once every other week and do some fill in for penetration with 1 mm with a roller every few days. It’s a sunk cost for me but once I run out of cartridges, disinfecting solution and the roller I’ll give it up and see if I loose any ground. With oral minoxidil the penetration aspect isn’t a big thing for me. Good luck with your trial though!

  15. GebGate on June 28, 2021 at 11:28 pm

    New day, new hope!

    Thanks guys for your responses.
@Kapil I truly doubt that I can amaze anyone here with my comments 🙂 I am very new in this and just to clarify, couple of weeks ago, I was staggered to hear from a doc that guys inherent their hair loss genes from their mother. First I thought that she was kidding to me since she knew about my dad’s full head of hear :D.
@FT and @Yoda saying that now we’ve got the more players than ever gives us the hope that one day we will get there eventually.
What seems hilarious for me is that people are really planning to go to Mars in near future while we haven’t even treated hair loss on the earth (I can’t even imagine what other illnesses are still without a remedy). I know that one has nothing to with another but for ordinary people it seems so. Anyway this covid situation made me realize that if proper people put their heads together we will get there really fast.

Hopes up hair loss community. I’m sure the breakthrough is on the horizon.

Looks like investment in AGA is picking up. Although I don’t have much hope in Dr Sinclair , If his lab succeeds in their treatment – they could use some of the profits to fund all of their anti-aging research.

No update available, the gist is still the same as previous updates: still working on it.

        Hi admin
I have come across Dr. John Satino ‘s. CBD OIL study, is it worth an article on FT?

        Thanks

        • Follicle Thought on July 4, 2021 at 8:10 pm

Not yet Kapil, perhaps in the near future pending some facts.

  25. GebGate on July 4, 2021 at 3:04 pm

    @Shayak thanks for the article.

@FT what are your thoughts about Moogene?

    • Follicle Thought on July 4, 2021 at 8:41 pm

I think they’re great, the article mentions when they plan to enter a human trial, I can’t remember off the top of my head.

@Yoda. Thank you for your input. It seems as though we are still at the tip of the iceberg in age-reversal technology. Ill take your advice and try to keep my hopes tamed; simply enjoy technological strides being made. Nevertheless, coming into terms with the fact that rot and wrinkles are inevitable at a young age (im barely an adult) will remain a challenge I hope to overcome in the near future.

    • Yoda on July 6, 2021 at 11:45 am

1919, the best advice Yoda can give is the be proactive in researching treatments and to take care of yourself, e.g. diet, exercise, sleep, etc. Yoda is no saint but I always tried my best to lead a healthy lifestyle and it helped keeping my youthful looks.

Not sure if it’s against the rules to post a link to the crowdfunding for the Procynadin B2 hairloss topical that went viral a month or so ago?

    But here it is….

For hair loss, you can use Minoxidil. It is a lotion applied to the balding scalp
twice daily. It works by locally dilating the blood vessels. This causes the hair
follicles to absorb more oxygen and nutrients. The result is an improvement
in hair quality and thicker, fuller hair

Any time you hear someone is working on a new concept for regrowing hair,
Figure at least 20 years before they discover it don’t work.
There is no cure for baldness, learn to live bald, it’s no big deal.

    • Follicle Thought on November 17, 2021 at 12:58 pm

Steve why are you here my good man? I can’t help but grin when I ask.

    • james on August 14, 2022 at 6:54 am

Why are you here you must have shown interest in your own problem of balding ….strange

      • Follicle Thought on August 14, 2022 at 9:46 am

Steve couldn’t answer the question james, it’s of course because he truly wants to believe that a cure for baldness is on the horizon.

    Hi All:
I am a 63 year old female in Australia and have hair thinning. I did see where Stut products are available now. Ive googled it and find anything. Do you know the url or name of the commercial products they sell? Also any other products that are currently available would be great also. Im awaiting Folica as that system sounds great but the next hurdle will be getting it approved for sale in Oz
    thanks.
    Sue
