Follica Publishes New Women’s Hair Growth Study

Follica announced today the completion of a female pilot study utilizing its proprietary microneedling device along with topical drug application.

Female Hair Growth Study

On December 8, 2020, a peer-reviewed study sponsored by Follica and titled “A Pilot Evaluation of Scalp Skin Wounding to Promote Hair Growth in Female Pattern Hair Loss” was published in the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology. The study took place in Boston, MA and included 11 female subjects with mild-to-moderate female pattern hair loss. Interestingly, the female subjects in this trial had all been receiving industry standard treatments for hair loss prior to the trial such as minoxidil, spironolactone, laser therapy, PRP, and even finasteride. According to the data in the study, the subjects had plateaued on the previous treatments over the course of 6 months or more and all treatments were stopped before beginning microneedling except for minoxidil and spironolactone.

The 11 females received 6 microneedling treatments over the course of 3 months in the study and applied topical foam minoxidil on days when not receiving microneedling treatments in the clinic (also, two women continued the use of oral spironolactone during the trial). Of the 11 subjects, 10 reported a self-perceived improvement in the appearance and fullness of their hair. All 11 subjects received an improved physician-graded Sinclair score at the end of the study relating to the Sinclair scale of female hair loss degrees. The duration of the microneedling treatment itself was not disclosed in the study, though, it was mentioned that topical lidocaine (numbing agent) was applied 20 minutes prior to beginning treatment.

The photo set above likely comes from the best responder in the group. All in all, it’s a good looking result, but difficult to judge how noticeable this woman’s hair loss would appear in a normal setting. A meaningful revelation of this study is that only topical minoxidil foam was mentioned as a adjunctive treatment to the Follica HFN microneedling device. In a press release that accompanied the publishing of the journal article, Follica mentioned that it is still planning to begin a phase 3 trial for male androgenic alopecia in 2021.

I’m sorry, I have to ask. Are you Baumer from the box office forums? :))

  3. Steve on December 10, 2020 at 3:25 am

I can’t believe we even need to have a phase three study for soemthing that is not even a new drug. I cant understand that. its literally just a microneedling device, albeit one thats optimised for hairgrowth. Nevertheless: why cant they just release it and carry out the phase three trials at the same time? now we will need to wait yet another year to start the trial, one year (at least) for trial + data read out, one year for FDA approval. its a joke!

    • Woofy97 on December 10, 2020 at 2:15 pm

Steve I agree with you. Totally ridiculous!

  4. Clara on December 10, 2020 at 4:59 am

    Hi,
Good news! Do you know when is it going to be able for us? Is there any possibility to join to the phase 3 trials?
    Thank you

That’s true, why they need trail for micro needling device and minoxidil?

Any update on Breezula, when they are planning to start trail?

  9. Mjones on December 10, 2020 at 1:14 pm

She has no hair loss guys lol. She has nice hair. Slight thinning in the front but could just be the way she combed it. They need to show a diffuse female pattern loss and the results after with it filled in with new thick growth. This pic makes no sense. Either way I’m not surprised…it’s a hair loss trial…and nothing ever goes right. People on reddit got better results doing this at home with a roller and minox lol. How many phase trials do we need for this….

    • naka on December 10, 2020 at 5:49 pm

she has got long hair…. how can you allow yourself to judge that she has no diffuse hair loss with just that kind of pic???

i feel like some of you have your neurons falling out along with your hair…

  10. Shia on December 10, 2020 at 5:53 pm

I’m sorry but I have to be that guy. Results are far from impressive, I have seen better improvements from top minoxidil responders. I hope to be wrong, because thinking it’s taking them decades to launch a low efficacy treatments makes me want to scream

  11. Mjones on December 10, 2020 at 6:03 pm

Naka I believe you lack neurons bro. She has no hairloss. Look at the pic. The hair part line is thin and narrow. It’s normal. My cousin has diffuse hair loss and her hair is long. The top of her hair when parted has a 1 inch gap. Her hair is nowhere as thick as this women’s hair. Go Google women with diffuse female pattern hairloss…you’ll see that those women have hairloss compared to this woman.

hi follicle thought, when do you think stemson will begin rollinng out hair cloning in the uk using the “specials” path? thanks

    • thinningontop on December 12, 2020 at 7:42 pm

They haven’t announced that they’re going to take that path from what I remember Woofy.. also, I’m pretty sure specials are only for medicines. Hairclone got one for ‘regenerative cell therapies’ which would fall into the category of medicine, not a surgical procedure.

      • Follicle Thought on December 13, 2020 at 6:18 pm

I’m not certain but I’m certainly leaning towards the idea that if Hairclone could do Specials for cell injections, then Stemson could as well.

I don’t think it has anything to do with cloning.

  20. woofy97 on December 16, 2020 at 12:48 am

paul_ire sent me this, not sure if he posted this already in here. stemson therapeutics invester fortunis caplital they gave stemson a multi million dollar investment, we all know that but he sent me this https://www.fortuniscapital.co.uk/our-investments link if you scroll down to “case study 3” they are clearly talking about stemson therapeutics because they write this “The IP is fully protected, and the rights to commercialise the regeneration of hair follicles via Stem Cell science is completely owned by the Investee”. and then they mention “Time to human clinical trials within the next 18 months”.

    • al.budny on December 16, 2020 at 6:07 am

Woofy from preclinical to human trials is a long road, remember Tsuji case?…..

      • Woofy97 on December 16, 2020 at 11:21 am

al Budny maybe it’s not a long road for stemson. this is from an investor for stemson I think they would know when trials will likely begin and probably want trials to begin soon if they are willing to invest millions they want to see things get done.

        • al.budny on December 16, 2020 at 11:52 am

Stemson is not yet ready for human trials, and may never be

          • Woofy97 on December 16, 2020 at 1:20 pm

You can say what ever you want but are you involved in the company? No you’re not. I will gladly take Fortunis 18month timeline over some random person on the internet probably the same person that writes horror stories about Finasteride.

          • al.budny on December 16, 2020 at 2:39 pm

Woofy from preclinical work to human trials is a long way….we will se in the end of 2021, I hope the trials take place in the UK

    • Paul_ire on December 17, 2020 at 10:05 am

From reading this again it doesn’t make sense, if stemson were going to use the specials in the UK they wudnt require clinical trials would they ? By them stating clinical trials in 18 months does that mean trials in America maybe ? As with the specials in the UK, the company doesn’t need to conduct trials.

  21. Devit on December 16, 2020 at 12:12 pm

It is unfortunate to read such update for RiverTown. I don’t understand why no investor taking interest for working treatment? I read earlier this was potential treatment for gray hair as well (as side effect but better one), anyone can imagine the revenue it could have generated.

  22. Twenti on December 16, 2020 at 9:32 pm

2020 was a waste but hearing that Stemson will likely start trials by 2022 is uplifting.

  24. Woofy97 on December 18, 2020 at 4:17 am

you know that 78 year old man who had suffered from AGA for decades he was like a NW 7 and after he burned his scalp by accident (freak accident) after falling out of his chair and hitting his head on hot chole from his fire place. something like that (I haven’t read the story in while) he noticed major regrowth of new full thick hair in the frontal area of his scalp there’s a picture it’s amazing I’ve posted it in the comments before. I wonder how deep the burns were but I mean there’s got to be a better way to replicate hair follicle wound induced neogenasis instead of needles (like Follica) and or burning your scalp lol. We need a new safe way to wound the scalp to cause the same regrowth this old man experienced.

  25. Anna on December 19, 2020 at 1:16 pm

I don’t understand why there’s so much negativity in these comments. It has only been three months between the before and after picture, and even though the results aren’t that impressive, if new hair follicles have truly formed, that is far superior than anything minoxidil can do. Why not wait and see before writing them off?

I do feel like they should have chosen a woman with more severe hair loss than that to post pictures of. This one, even the before picture you wouldn’t really be able to tell she had hair loss unless you look really closely. Maybe results would be more noticeable in someone who has actually lost a lot of hair.

    • Dee on December 19, 2020 at 3:05 pm

Here here we need to see someone with substantial hair loss with substantial regrowth to believe that there is a real chance of regeneration of hair so many of us have been waiting for years with a massive detrimental effect on our lives that only we understand

    • Soull on December 19, 2020 at 3:15 pm

anna welcome! I’ll explain you briefly, those who comment negatively are the super hopeful and those who never miss the appointment to vent when they don’t see a total solution.

I also think that they should have chosen another girl with more loss but it is what we have and a positive change is observed

    • MRKA on December 20, 2020 at 1:46 am

Anne, she also used minoxidil for a significant time before she participated in the study. Thus the results are ok methinks. A few months ago, pictures were shown of a guy that had considerable success. If you combine this treatment with Avodart or Propecia (men only) then its probably quite good for many balding people..but not all.
At least the HT butchers will lose a lot of revenue..good!!

  26. Woofy97 on December 19, 2020 at 1:52 pm

Yeah they should have chosen a women with more severe hair loss.

  27. Woofy97 on December 19, 2020 at 1:54 pm

And That just tells you the confidence in there product if they are not willing to test on the most severe.

  28. Woofy97 on December 20, 2020 at 3:56 am

Some guy told me that he saw a story in the news a couple of months ago about a guy who had AGA and he accidentally applied cellulite cream on his scalp thinking it was sun screen and it’s caused chemical burns but his hair regrew I asked him to send me the link and pictures he never responded and I also tried to look it up but I couldn’t find the story. Has Anyone here heard about this story? I don’t think anyone here has heard this story but I thought I would ask lol.

  29. Woofy97 on December 20, 2020 at 3:04 pm

I can’t. Why does it take so long like what do these people do all day? I don’t understand why it has to take years to get out pre clinical and to finally start a trial. It’s Extremely slow

    • Dee on December 20, 2020 at 3:40 pm

Aye indeed and look how quick the C ovid vaccine came about and we wait years upon years for something that may be marginally good just saying not been negative

      • Follicle Thought on December 20, 2020 at 4:37 pm

The hair growth/hair loss cure community could really benefit from a very wealthy benefactor. I’m surprised not more have stepped up to that task, but breakthrough could come at anytime. A lot of labs/companies could be doing much better with a few more million $ at their disposal. Stemson should really be able to progress with all the money they’ve just received.

    • al.budny on December 20, 2020 at 3:42 pm

  30. Woofy97 on December 20, 2020 at 4:33 pm

Yeah that’s true al budny. And they should because nobody wants to bald young! Or even bald at all. And Especially women with female pattern hair loss.

  31. Woofy97 on December 20, 2020 at 5:10 pm

Hey yoda, what NW level are you? And what level do you think you would have gone to if you never got on Finasteride or dutasteride?

    • Yoda on December 20, 2020 at 6:17 pm

Woofy, I guess I’m about an NW 2 but my thinning was real bad behind my forelock. I’d rather answer the 2nd question this way…If I hadn’t researched treatments and evolved them with time/age, Yoda would’ve been horseshoe bald many, many years ago. Started loosing hair at 17, now 58.

  32. Woofy97 on December 20, 2020 at 8:42 pm

I wish I got on Finasteride sooner that was one of the worst mistakes Ive ever made I listed to the horror stories and thought it would stop, so stupid of me. See if Finasteride actually regrew hair (I’m talking like a full head of hair or brings me back to a nw 3 or 2 I wouldn’t be on here Anymore looking for the Next best thing in the pipeline, but fin just halts it which is bad and good. I can’t even get a god damn transplant makes me so depressed.

    • Yoda on December 21, 2020 at 1:30 pm

Woofman, you are using topical minoxidil aren’t you? Need the growth stimulation along with the DHT inhabitation from fin. Yoda needs/needed bigger guns, not sure if you do yet as you are still a young man.

      • Woofy97 on December 21, 2020 at 2:01 pm

hi Yoda, I used topical minoxidil drips like 4 times and it started to like burn my scalp so I stopped and I just take 1mg Finasteride the first Year I had pretty regrowth but idk I kinda feel like the frontal area has thinned just a little nothing to bad but the crown area hasn’t changed. Maybe instead of minoxidil I’ll try micro needling people seem to have good results from that also. I think I’ll order the micro needling pen.

        • Yoda on December 21, 2020 at 3:30 pm

I micro needle, I don’t think it does much if anything. Woofy, you need to be on minoxidil to stimulate regrowth. The burning was probably from polypropylene glycol. There are topical minox formulas that don’t have this, including liquids, lotions. If you don’t want to search for one, Rogaine or Kirkland foam would be better than nothing! Come on Son!

  33. Sierra on December 20, 2020 at 10:15 pm

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it seems like as long as people keep buying what’s on the market at the moment (minox, rogaine etc), big pharma will keep buying out competitors and will never allow a permanent treatment option to be released.
Because either hair loss is truly impossible to crack (I don’t think it is) or there is another reason (money) all these startups keep failing and never get past a certain point.
Not blaming anyone for using these products of course, these are unfortunately the only options available.

  35. Radula on December 21, 2020 at 10:34 am

I’m curious as to what this Mane biotech app that is launching “soon”. Doesn’t seem like a smart idea to launch an app without a product, so maybe they are closer to revealing something on that front. Also, hopefully Triplehair is still on track to release their product in the first quarter. Furthermore, Samumed will be completing phase 3 trials by March. I also have insider information that admin was the first human trial that Tsuji completed and is set to reveal his results on Christmas day. Here’s to ending 2020 on a positive note. We’re all gonna make it.

FT you should try and get another update from stemson and ask when they plan to start trials so we get a concrete answer and we all don’t have to keep speculating back and forth. And can you tell them that woofy97 says hurry the hell up lol jk don’t say that but seriously please try and get an interview I would really appreciate it. Thanks FT for creating this website and doing what you do! ?

Admin bad news, maybe their researches doesnt go well:(

  38. Stef on December 22, 2020 at 3:12 am

Yoda, why do you micro needle if you don’t thinks it’s doing anything? I only ask because I’ve started about 3.5 months ago and I think I’m starting to see some results. All the miniaturized hair on my hairline seems to be slowly getting thicker. They aren’t back to full strong hair, but they aren’t just peach fuzz anymore either. I’m hoping with continued use of micro needling and minox I can complete the conversion so to speak

    • Yoda on December 22, 2020 at 5:14 pm

Hi Steph, “think” is the right word. I just haven’t seen any conclusive evidence that needling at home does much good. I’m on other treatments so it’s hard to tell. For me it’s a sunk cost, I have a derminator and will continue to use every other week along with a shorter roller every other day until I run out of cartridges. Then I’ll give it a rest as I’m getting tired of the process. I also use a goofy original HairMax laser comb, it’s probably over 20 years. It’s bought and paid for, no harm, maybe some good but I doubt the latter. I’ll continue to use until it craps out, I wish that was soon so I could justify stopping. Yoda can be a bit cavalier abut these adjunct treatments as I’m presently in a pretty good hair place with the main tools in my arsenal.

      • Dee on December 23, 2020 at 3:58 am

Hi yoga I used microneedling 1.25 roller for 1year with zero results I also got bored with it if I had of seen at least 1 hair making the effort to regrow/regenerate i would have continued boredom or not I used once per week

  39. Yoda on December 22, 2020 at 5:16 pm

    Sorry, Stef not Steph!

  40. Stef on December 22, 2020 at 9:44 pm

All good! Thanks for the response, yoda. Since I’m relatively new to micro needling and I can see what seem to be some apparent improvements I’ll keep an eye on it. I have some before pictures so if by 6-9 months it’s significantly improved I might share a link of photos here so people can see first hand the progress. Fingers crossed!

    • MRKA on December 23, 2020 at 3:39 am

      Stef…good on you!

What we know according to one study (Applied Biology was involved) from this year is that it improves topical minox response. Sadly I couldnt read the study yet. It would be nice to be able to read details

Does at home needling causes new follicles to be formed..maybe..maybe not.

Follicas method most likely does it.

Therefore, if you are a minox non-responder you most likely benefit from it.

If you were a good responder like Yoda the benefits would be probably marginal unless your at home procedure creates new follicles but who knows.

      • Stef on December 25, 2020 at 12:17 am

Yeah I can tell you from my personal experience it’s not creating any new follicle growth, nor would I expect that from just making tiny punctures in your scalp but what I’m seeing is a whole bunch of peach fuzz essentially getting life back and becoming fuller and darker. If it continues to work my hairline will be significantly improved by saving the miniaturizing hairs on my scalp and making them more “real hairs” again. Wish me luck and I hope I’ll good news to report in another couple months

Hi admin , have you any new hopeful news
for treatment aga in 2021 that may be available to everyone in this?
    Waiting is annoying

    • Follicle Thought on December 24, 2020 at 6:57 pm

Hi Ptpn, There is a chance that the Mane Biotech device may be available to some in 2021, that may become an interesting treatment. I just spoke to the founder, he would still like to keep this under wraps for a while, but when an update is available I will share one on the site.

      • Sam on December 24, 2020 at 9:54 pm

        Hi admin
Do you still think that Hairclone will be available in 2021? It would be nice to have an update.
        Thanks!

Now that this terrible year is coming to an end, I hope that new therapies may be available in 2021. Thanks to the admin for his great work that he is doing here.

    Merry Christmas

I saw some screenshots of the new Mane Biotech app but was asked not to share them on the website. Just standard stuff but the device is not ready yet. Will have some new articles coming in soon but not from Mane. Thanks and Happy Holidays

        • Tom on December 26, 2020 at 8:57 pm

Will this just be like all the other laser helmet stuff?

          • Follicle Thought on December 27, 2020 at 12:14 pm

No, it’s an electric stimulation device, not a laser helmet. I don’t know what efficacy will be but they are putting a lot of time and energy into it.

  44. Woofy97 on December 26, 2020 at 1:31 am

Hi FT, I found this company not sure if you’re have heard of this company or have posted about it before I can’t remember anyways here it is https://www.xenotherapeutics.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAuJb_BRDJARIsAKkycUnFtbO7nENbKNzOV9Gn-_L8haPLjWIB3jwzqmnGGHsVkrMLQhHnmLUaAq7MEALw_wcB I think you might found it interesting. Woofy what about hair?

    • Follicle Thought on December 26, 2020 at 3:26 pm

Thanks much for sharing Woofy, I notice they are interested in skin engineering but I don’t see anything specific about hair at this point on their site.

    @Follicle Thought
Regarding Mane Biotech, in their promotional video they stated that device is stored inside a hat and it will cost 30€/month. Do you know if they have to go through full drug testing procedure akin to drug testing?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqiAE3apwXg

    • Follicle Thought on December 28, 2020 at 9:58 am

I believe it will go through the device route and not drug. This is typically a medium size safety/efficacy study or one small safety study and then larger approval study.

  46. Yoda on December 27, 2020 at 7:14 pm

Sounds like the next generation of laser caps. That’s not a fact or even opinion as I really have no idea what this thing is, haven’t put any time in to research it. However, I wasn’t all that impressed by the video, could be similar to early pitches on lasers into hair transplant clinics was like. If it’s a money maker the some docs will get on-board even if the effectiveness is dubious. Could my ignorant initial reaction be on target?

  47. Radula on December 28, 2020 at 12:49 am

I love every concept and idea equally but show me the results. Its tough not to get emotionally invested but we must view everything with the same impartial analysis. Goodluck to them. I will say a subscription based concept like a netflix account seems to be a red flag but I will hold off judgement until I see something more concrete. If it gives me a lions mane I will gladly pay.

  48. MRKA on December 28, 2020 at 1:51 am

Sounds similar to the UW Madison device. That is a positive methinks. At least it is not pricey IMO.
Could be worth a try in ADDITION to current existing treatments.
But I am sure there will be people that give up their current succesful treatments to try this one out. If it fails (most likely), I wont feel sorry for them.

    • Radula on December 29, 2020 at 3:03 pm

I wish UW Madison device would just release. I’d love to try it in addition to other treatments. Who knows with Samumed releasing it could be a very good option for the young guys

  49. John Doe on December 28, 2020 at 9:45 am

I think its a great video and I look forward to try the device for sure. I dont know how effective this will be but its not like any of those snake oil companies from Turkey or Italy. Thanks for sharing.

It should be an important study in the treatment of alopecia and hair loss. Source / Dr. Sara Wickström
    ● hair loss might be prevented by regulating stem cell metabolism
    ● Glutamine Metabolism Controls Stem Cell Fate Reversibility and Long-Term Maintenance in the Hair Follicle
    ● The stem cells were caused by a loss of metabolic flexibility.
    ● that stem cells and daughter cells have distinct metabolic characteristics,
    ● Our analyses further predicted that Rictor, an important but relatively poorly understood molecular component of the metabolic master regulator mTOR pathway, would be involved
    ● The key finding of this study is that this so-called fate reversibility requires a shift from glutamine metabolism and cellular respiration to glycolysis
    ● That application of a glutaminase inhibitor was able to restore stem cell function in Rictor-deficient mice.

It can also be used preventively. Women do not usually have a genetic predisposition to hair loss, says Carlos Chacón Martínez. The first series of tests started with friends in Britain. And there was also a self-experiment: on the shaved leg, because the two owners (still) have full hair on their heads. The results were promising, although hair on the legs generally does not grow back as quickly as on the head, the scientists explain. BY KATJA LENZ It shouldn’t be a magic drug. And patience falls. “Those who have been losing their hair for ten years also need ten years to regain their hair,” explains Dr. Carlos Chacón Martínez, who does not have shampoos, creams, tinctures, transplants or nutritional advice on hand. The method works very differently. To put it somewhat simplified: the stimuli induce the dormant stem cells in the scalp to overcome their laziness and let the hair sprout again. Even if someone is absolutely bald, activate the stem cells again ”, Carlos Chacón Martínez is convinced (39). We do not promise miracles. It is a natural way. Artificial intelligence should control treatment A ready-to-market device should be available in about three years. The prototype is currently being reviewed and, at the same time, software with artificial intelligence is being developed to control the functions. The user gets an overview of the treatment through the mobile phone application. There are no side effects.” He only has his own body with its abilities and uses these ”, explains Carlos Chacón Martínez.
