Hair Cloning Research And Progress 2023

Hair Cloning Research Expanding

There has been no shortage of hair cloning news in the world of late, which is a good thing. In fact, three out of my four recent articles featured different hair cloning treatment modalities. This article will discuss more, and you can expect even more hair cloning news coming soon to Follicle Thought, including exclusive interviews with two research laboratories, not previously discussed in the spotlight, who are working to bring their technology to a clinical setting. For now, we have some compelling new information put forth by one of the most well known hair cloning companies, Stemson Therapeutics.

Recently, at an Alliance for Regenerative Medicine conference which took place in October 2023, Stemson’s CEO Geoff Hamilton shared slides which, for the first time ever, contain a timeline projection of his company moving into a clinical trial. Although the estimation for the trial to begin is not next Monday like we all hoped for, hearing Stemson Therapeutics confidently lay out a path of finalizing their cell protocol next year, and entering a clinical trial in 2026 are positive indicators for their technology. Stemson is currently the largest and highest funded company in the hair cloning circuit.

To rehash other hair cloning clinical developments, Follicle Thought has recently covered the topics of Epibiotech moving into a cell therapy clinical trial by the end of 2023, Junji Fukuda and his company TrichoSeeds Inc. moving into a clinical trial in 2024, and Dr. Tsuji’s company OrganTech moving into a clinical trial near Q2 2024. Additionally, other research news recently circulated involving researchers from New York who were able to 3D-print hair follicles which were grown in lab skin. Though, to be fair, this research is very early stage, and not close to the developed therapies mentioned previously.

Abu Dhabi Clinic Offering Hair Stem Cell Procedure?

Several months ago, an interesting, but ambiguous, article was published on The National News website detailing a supposed “cutting-edge” hair growth procedure involving hair follicle stem cells and laboratory processing at a clinic. The clinic in this case is the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center based in the United Arab Emirates. A quick browse through the ADSCC’s website shows a wide range of treatment services and research modalities. For example, the clinic’s Research Platforms page contains sections for Stem Cell Lab Processing, Stem Cell Culture & Sorting, and Clinical Trial Coordination, among other resources. Currently, there is no specific information regarding the stem cell hair regrowth procedure on the ADSCC website, however, a few details about the procedure can be extracted from the recent news article

Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (The National)

Details of interest shared in the news:

  • “A few hairs, a maximum of 10, are extracted from the scalp and sent to a laboratory.”
  • “At the lab, stem cells are extracted from the hair follicles and processed before being injected back into bald spots.”
  • The procedure is described as being “in its infancy.”
  • “Our treatment is innovative – women may need three sessions and men usually five sessions with 10 days between each session, but the number of sessions vary from case to case,”
  • “With stem cell treatments however, processed stem cells – taken from patients few days before – are implanted into the hair follicle so new hair can grow from them.”

After my initial intrigue at this news, I began to wonder if this procedure in Abu Dhabi was actually something new and innovative, or if it was simply a masked version of a technique which has existed for several years and has a similar reputation to PRP in terms of response rate. The latter technique, known as Regenera Activa, involves extracting several follicles from behind a patient’s ear, placing them into a Regenera Activa machine which grinds the follicles into a solution, and then injecting that cellular solution into thinning scalp areas. The limitation of Regenera Activa is that it does not increase the number of hair cells going back into the scalp since the cells are not being cultured or multiplied – only liquified.  However, a few quotes in the ADSCC article allude to the idea that their procedure may be unique and different from old methods. Most importantly, it’s stated that the cells are taken from patients “a few days before”, this could indicate that the cells may be undergoing culturing/expansion over those days. In contrast, Regenera Activate procedures are one-time sessions which are completed within one hour. Additionally, the description of the ADSCC procedure mentioned patients coming back for multiple sessions over the course of weeks.

Ultimately, there are still questions to be answered about the “new” procedure being offered in Abu Dhabi. One of the most important questions: what do the results look like? Details from the news article above indicate that there is a unique hair growth therapy being offered in the UAE, but for now we don’t know all of the important details. Readers may inquire about this procedure only at their own discretion. Follicle Thought hopes to receive and share more insight about the ADSCC hair stem cell treatment in the near future.

Update: A reader in the comment section spotted this video from ADSCC’s Instagram account which provides further details about the procedure being offered. Apparently, 10-12 hairs are plucked, not surgically extracted, and the cells from the hair bulbs are then mixed with PRP. Then, the cellular concoction is injected into the scalp. The positive aspects learned from the video are that the procedure does not permanently use hair follicles from the donor area. The non-ideal aspects learned are that there is no mention of culturing the cells in the video, and a reputable portfolio of patient’s results images are still missing.

Thanks to Soul for the tip on Stemson.

What are some initial thoughts about the ADSCC procedure?

    • YoYo on November 30, 2023 at 11:12 pm

Excellent work as usual FT. It’s a shame about the clinical trials for Stemson as we all hoped for clinical trials to initiate next year but it is what it is. However we do have Yokohama and other hair cloning companies at work at a sooner timeline!

This is unbelievable news admin, human trials in 2025!! What are your thoughts

    • Follicle Thought on December 1, 2023 at 10:10 am

George, according to the timeline it looks like they’re planning for human trials in 2026.

This dude did 5 sessions look at the before and after it’s obviously a scam. And the video doesn’t mention anything about multiplication of Stem cells. One comment mentions one session is between 400-800 USD

    • Follicle Thought on December 1, 2023 at 10:11 am

Thanks for the share, M! I will update the article content accordingly.

I agree with your assessment, that after viewing this video it does not seem as though the cells are truly cultured. The idea of plucking hairs instead of removing the whole follicle is interesting to me, but I think it would need the culturing to be a viable treatment. I wouldn’t mind trying it for free.

  5. Nick on December 1, 2023 at 12:29 pm

How about plucking a hair follicle and implanting in the receipent area with verteporfin. The plucked hair has stem cells cling to the root. The small wound in receipent area with vertepordin and the stem cells could get the plucked hair to grow.

    • Follicle Thought on December 1, 2023 at 1:59 pm

I love the idea Nick, thanks for your input.

Surgeons had tried a similar method using Acell years ago with inconsistent results, but verteporfin may be a new angle. I’ll bring this up to some folks who could make it happen.

  6. Nick on December 1, 2023 at 2:16 pm

With Acelll I talked to one clinic that got some plucked sideburn hair to grow. I think there is a much better chance of getting plucked head hair to grow with verteporfin.

    • Follicle Thought on December 1, 2023 at 2:56 pm

I really do like the idea Nick, I think it’s worth a shot for sure.

      • Ingrid on December 2, 2023 at 5:54 am

        Great idea, sounds interesting!
I can not understand why it takes so long to make clinic trials in human. There are a lot of people who would try it.
I only heard it could be a risk für cancer.

        • Follicle Thought on December 2, 2023 at 10:58 am

Ingrid, thanks for your feedback. Clinical trials usually require a sponsor/company to initiate one, and they also usually require animal testing to show that the treatment is safe in regards to toxicity.

Admin with this updated news on stemson if they reach trials by 2026 what do you think the market year would be? For release ?

    • Follicle Thought on December 4, 2023 at 2:43 pm

George, an optimal case in the US could be 2033 in that scenario. There may be potentials overseas as well, but you never know if they’re going to try to hurry things at all.

  9. YoYo on December 7, 2023 at 12:18 pm

As the year is coming to an end I want to thank you FT for all your consistent hard work and here’s to hoping for better news for next year! Hopefully we get to learn more from Amplifica, Pelage and Fukuda soon

Can only agree with YoYo. Great job you are doing here admin. Thanks for the interviews and reports. A lot will happen in the next few years, even if some trolls see it differently.

    https://www.biospectrumindia.com/news/73/23910/aclaris-therapeutics-announces-patent-license-agreement-with-sun-pharma-for-alopecia-treatment.html

Just came across this, do you think it will be successful for AGA as it seems to be for AA already ? also if it is already in a phase 3 trial for AA will it need to do all 3 phased clinical trials for AGA?

    • Follicle Thought on December 10, 2023 at 6:26 pm

Andy, I don’t believe Sun Pharma will actually pursue the JAK inhibitor for AGA. I believe they just mentioned that in the press release because Aclaris threw in the rights to AGA in the deal. When Aclaris themselves tried JAK inhibitors for AGA and didn’t have stellar succes, plus the safety issue around JAK inhibitors, I think that was the end of JAKs in AGA.

        Dear Admin,
I wish you the best for 2024 and many thanks for the great work.
I hope that 2024 will bring good news for all of us.

  11. faust on December 19, 2023 at 1:48 am

Great content as always. Moeman our “insider” into the sinclair hmi 115 studies published his results and hmi appears to
be best thing we’ll soon hopefuly have on the market. Results are great in my opinion. He regrew at least 2 full nws and also covered his previously slick bald areas. For nw 1-4 this would practically be the cure. Maybe you can organize some interview with the guy and ask him in detail about the experience. I’m not sure why this isn’t followed more , it’s the bigest clinical trial result in decades.

    Thanks again.

  12. Andy on December 22, 2023 at 8:59 am

Admin, any positive updates coming soon to wrap up 2023 and start 2024? Hopefully next year is full of big breakthroughs.

  13. nobody on December 22, 2023 at 9:43 am

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year. Let’s look forward to the developments in the next few years 😀

  14. Sam on December 27, 2023 at 2:23 pm

    Hello All,

I hope everyone is enjoying a happy holiday season as the year winds down. My general question: are there any cures (treatments) that we can look forward to rather soon (i.e. this decade)? I feel that any and all organ regenerative therapies are many many many years away.

  15. M on December 28, 2023 at 4:52 pm

No end of year post FT ! Anything to look up to next year, just something to raise the hopes of the depressed crowd.

  16. Federico on December 28, 2023 at 5:18 pm

  17. YoYo on January 1, 2024 at 6:57 pm

I think we can all look forward to hearing from Amplifica, Yokohoma and Pelage this year. Happy New Year to you all!

  18. twenti on January 8, 2024 at 2:37 pm

Happy new year all. May this year bring about more progress.
