ISHRS 27th World Congress Meeting

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery is having its annual World Congress meeting on November 13 – 17 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Every year, members of the ISHRS get together to discuss the latest advances in hair restoration surgery and hair growth science. Throughout the years, many people have looked forward to this conference for the potential of a game changing therapy being unveiled. Last week on October 22nd, the program for the upcoming ISHRS 27th World Congress was published displaying all of the presentations and sessions which be taking place in Bangkok.

The Latest In Hair Growth Research

One of the major opening lectures of the Congress, known as the “Stough Lecture” will be given this year by Ohsang Kwon, MD, PhD of South Korea. His speech titled “Allogeneic Hair Transplantation: Current Status” will discuss the topic of restoring hair via transplantation, albeit, the follicles come from another person. It’s not the Holy Grail that some may have imagined, but there will undoubtedly be a market for this if it were to become available; most likely for people who have exhausted their own donor scalp follicles. Kwon’s research published earlier this year showed that allogeneic hair transplantation was possible without administering immunosuppressant drugs.

Day two of the World Congress will feature one of the most exciting sessions of the event titled “Current Hair Follicle and Stem Cell Research.” This is where some of the latest and greatest hair regeneration research is presented by leading doctors and scientists from across the industry. The lineup of presentations at this year’s Congress are as follows:

  • Adipose Derived Stem Cells: Where Are They From and What Are They Doing for the Hair Follicle? Gillian Westgate, PhD United Kingdom

Dr. Westgate is a scientist at the famous Centre for Skin Sciences at the University of Branford in the UK. It will be interesting to hear the latest on techniques for utilizing adipose derived stem cells in hair loss.

  • A Review of the First FDA Approved Study on Regenerative (Stem) Cells for Hair Loss – What Have We Learned? Gorana Kuka-Epstein, MD  Serbia

Dr. Kuka-Epstein is the Director of Research for the Foundation for Hair Restoration and has published a peer-reviewed study on stem cells for treating hair loss.

  • Methods for Deriving Hair Follicle Containing Sheets In Vitro
Craig L. Ziering, DO, FISHRS  USA

Dr. Ziering has kept a hand in the leading advances of hair restoration over the years, one of them being his well-known physician sponsored trial of Histogen’s HSC which lead to some of the best hair growth results we have seen from an injectable to date. This presentation appears to be on a method for mass-producing cultured human hair follicles.

  • The Experience of Using Autologous Scalp Tissue Micrograft Obtained with Rigenera Technology for Hair Restoration Ratchathorn Panchaprateep, MD, PhD, FISHRS  Thailand

Dr. Panchaprateep will be delving into a topic which was recently covered on Follicle Thought last week, the Regenera Activa stem cell injection. I will hopefully be able to share any results presented by the doctor following the World Congress event.

TissUse Poster

A very positive sign for anyone following the latest SHT/J.Hewitt developments, TissUse has a poster on display at this year’s ISHRS Congress titled: Development of Hair Follicle Anagen In Vitro as a Proof for the Hair Growth Inductive Properties of Neopapilla Hair Germ Transplants Intended for  ‘Hair Cloning’Gerd Lindner, PhD  Germany”

Perhaps, following the Congress there will be an update shared about the exciting pending human trials for TissUse and J. Hewitt in Japan. Stay tuned.

That sums up the majority of the new developments being shared at this year’s ISHRS meeting, which topics do you find the most interesting at this year’s Congress?

Wait, are people really getting hairs from someone else in their head yet>?

    • Follicle Thought on October 30, 2019 at 12:12 am

Human to human hair transplants are not available yet, as the study was preclinical but Dr. Oh-sang is furthering the research using UV radiation on dendritic cells to advance allogeneic transplant potentials. It could be an option in the future.

  2. Rajesh on October 29, 2019 at 10:41 pm

Sir, is the tissue trial still planned for later this year as reported?

    • Follicle Thought on October 30, 2019 at 12:08 am

Things are moving ahead as planned, may be a slight delay as for a manner of weeks but all is good. The company is moving forward.

  3. KD on October 29, 2019 at 11:21 pm

Come onnnnn Tissuse, we need ya

  4. Greg on October 30, 2019 at 4:54 am

I think that next year or the year after (world Hair Congress) there’ll be a lot more to talk about as people like tsuji or TissUse would have conducted some trials and of released their procedures. Looking forward to announcements at this one too. What do you think will be the highlights?

    • Follicle Thought on October 30, 2019 at 10:23 am

I think the TissUse poster and the presentation on mass production of cultured hair follicles is the most advanced research at this Congress. With potential for one of the stem cell lectures to show some interesting results.

      • Hakan on October 30, 2019 at 1:33 pm

So Tissuse won’t speak t this conference? There will only a Poster be published?

Thanks for find this conference. Please look out for events with Shiseido or Tsuji attending.

        • Hakan on October 31, 2019 at 5:41 am

          @Admin?

        • Follicle Thought on October 31, 2019 at 11:11 am

Hakan, apologies I thought I responded to your question. I believe Dr. Lindner will be at the Congress but I’m not sure if he will be presenting. I will probably hear back after the conference from some doctors in the UK that I speak to on Twitter. I am keeping an eye out for Shiseido and Tsuji news as always. I believe both are highly likely to share something before year’s end.

  5. pablo on October 30, 2019 at 1:54 pm

what are results from Dr. Epstein’s study on hair loss? is this something that is out already?

  6. Mattt on October 30, 2019 at 2:18 pm

Is anyone from Shisiedo expected to be there?

    • Follicle Thought on October 30, 2019 at 5:22 pm

I did not see Shiseido listed on the program anywhere, however personnel from the company could certainly attend. Right now I am looking out for Shiseido to attend an Asian based conference which seems to be more likely at the moment.

  7. Hairguy on October 30, 2019 at 8:05 pm

Same old song and dance at these conferences. They all talk about promising new hair loss treatments and nothing ever comes from it. I’ve been waiting and hearing about hair regeneration since 2001. Not to be a Debbie downer but it’s the reality of it. I wouldn’t be surprised that 2029 we are still talking about upcoming hair regeneration potential. Honestly, it’s follica and maybe SM that will hit the market. Most likely follica by 2021. I just don’t see hair regeneration becoming a full regrowth cure any time soon regardless of all the tsuji, tissuse hype. I hope I’m wrong but I’m probably not. The big three with follica will be what available for the upcoming ten years.

    • C on October 30, 2019 at 8:45 pm

I couldn’t have said it better myself. These hair conferences are meets-and-greets.

      • Dante on October 30, 2019 at 9:20 pm

Yes but if Tissue shows good results in 5 months what will everyone say then? Might as well face it we’re addicted to hair..

        • Follicle Thought on October 30, 2019 at 10:14 pm

I agree I think TissUse and other companies we know of could really surprise a lot of people. There’s always the potential of advanced research going on behind the scenes.

    • Will on October 30, 2019 at 9:36 pm

@admin, have you heard anything from Follica? Are they still on pace for pivotal trial by EOY?

      Thanks!

      • Follicle Thought on October 30, 2019 at 10:40 pm

I have not heard from Follica lately, however I can and will reach out to a member of management to see what their schedule is looking like currently. Last we heard the optimization trial was winding down by the end of the year and pivotal trial was going to begin shortly thereafter.

    • Yoda on October 31, 2019 at 4:42 pm

Spot on Hairguy, doesn’t mean we won’t see hair regeneration someday in the future. I just don’t see it happening in the next few years as being a treatment for the masses, if/when it comes to fruition. My opinion is that we’re quite a few years away for the average Joe to pop into a clinic easily, at a cost of goods that is realistic, at least on par with the best transplant surgery. That being said, I do appreciate the Admin reporting on all things on the horizon, both near and the not so near term.

  8. Drago on October 31, 2019 at 4:07 am

    NGF574/Celino – speechless?

    • Follicle Thought on October 31, 2019 at 11:53 am

Hi Drago, the product has been available to a decent sizes group for about 1.5 months or so now. There is not yet a consensus coming from the crowd yet. I continue to monitor the man on youtube who has had the product longer, about 3 months now. There are also several readers of this site who are using the product such as Welsh Dragon and Michael. Look for them to comment here and share their updates.

  9. Mike P on October 31, 2019 at 7:51 pm

I still keep hope that something will surprise, I see a few presentations that people don’t know what may come of them. Even if something came out overseas and was expensive it would at least change the idea that we can/cant be cured. I think id even enjoy seeing someone who went nw6 to nw2 from a new school treatment.

  10. 19andbaldin on October 31, 2019 at 9:52 pm

I dont really see any treatment in clinical trials which will be released before 2023.Sad but science isn’t just there yet.

    • Follicle Thought on October 31, 2019 at 11:23 pm

TissUse and maybe some others do have a chance to come out earlier than last projected on the Ultimate Guide pipeline chart, I will update this soon.

ADMIN please inform us about Tissuse poster 🙂 Very excited about that

  12. Stephen on November 15, 2019 at 7:34 pm

The real meeting is being set up by Dr. Cole the day after in BANGKOK! That’s the one I’m interested in!

    • Follicle Thought on November 15, 2019 at 8:08 pm

      What do you mean Stephen?

      • Stephen on November 15, 2019 at 8:24 pm

Dr. John Cole tweeted today he and another researcher are putting on a real conference the day after! The real info will come from this meeting. Sounds like Dr Cole has had enough of this organization! I will pull his tweets and get back.

  13. Stephen on November 15, 2019 at 8:27 pm

He says the current meeting is nothing more than FUT! The better meeting is here

    • Stephen on November 15, 2019 at 8:30 pm

I’ve meet Dr Cole several times and he is doing real in house studies all the time! He does a lot of research! Same for Dr Grecco as well! They are both transplant surgeons looking to improve options. I know everyone is lowering expectations on exosomes but having heard his comments on the topic I would NOT draw any early conclusions! He’s the real deal.

Anything happen with Tissuse this weekend admin?

    • Follicle Thought on November 18, 2019 at 11:53 am

      H. I didn’t hear anything yet other than their poster was on display. But, the trial planning is still moving forward as earlier reported, so that is very important. The trial may be delayed to begin in January now, but that is approaching rapidly.

      • H. on November 18, 2019 at 9:24 pm

        Okay thank you
